Industrial waste treatment process engineering: biological processes

The title of the series defines the scope of the books. Industrial, indicating problems characteristic of, and solutions aimed at, manufacturing and processing plants. Waste Treatment, indicating treatment of wastes, solids, and residuals generated in manufacturing. Process engineering, indicating that design application and selection procedures ar edetailed. The tone of the technical discussions reflects industrial realities, requiring economic and site specific process engineering considerations to avoid noncompliance notoriety and fines, and to optimize capital and operating expenditures.
Waste control is treated as a single subject; sequencing process controls applied to (1) the raw materials entering the plant, (2) the generation source, (3) passage through a production plant, and (4) to a final central treatment. A facility treatment problem is addressed as two related subjects. One involving manufacturing evaluation to eliminate or minimize waste generation, and the other involving selection and application of appropriate unit operations to treat resulting effluents. The entire industrial problem is presented in a three volume set. Volume I details source correction, pollution prevention, development of a facility treatment system, and primary chemical treatment; Volume II details biological treatment unit operations; and Volume III details special treatment systems.
These books are written to guide experienced engineers through the various steps of industrial liquid and solid waste treatment. However, the structure of the text allows a widerapplication suitable to various experience levels; by beginning each chapter with a simplified explanation of applicabletheory, expanding to practical design discussions, and finishing with system flowsheets and case study detail calculations. The reader can "enter or leave" a chapter according to their specific needs. As a result, it can serve as a primer for students engaged in environmental engineering studies, or a "one stop" source for experienced engineers. It includes basic design principles which could be applied to municipal systems with significant industrial influents. In fact, substantial portions of the books are applicable to primary, secondary and tertiary municipal plant treatment. Conventional treatment methods are emphasized, allowing evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies akin to these methods, permitting enhancement to achieve improved performance. Innovative technologies are not downgraded, but encouraged as a choice based on understanding the basic operating principles; but not employed as a fad to replace applicable available technology.
